Research Opportunities in Europe

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research is hosting a European Researcher Mobility Roadshow on campus on Wednesday, November 20, 2019. Guest speakers Mary Kavanagh, Jose Labastida, Klaus Haupt and Viktoria Bodnarova will discuss the flagship programs and initiatives offered by the European Union to researchers at all stages of their careers which include Horizon 2020, European Research Council grants, Marie-Sklodowska Curie Fellowships, Erasmus Mundus Masters and the Euraxess Network.

Attend the Educational Partnerships for Innovation in Communities (EPIC) Workshop Hosted on the UCLA Campus

The 2019 California Higher Education Collaborative (CHEC) Conference will be held at the UCLA Luskin Conference Center from October 1-3, 2019. This conference convenes administrative leaders and professionals from the three segments of California public higher education to encourage the exchange of ideas and practices, which may improve administrative performance, service, and outcomes.

2020-21 Call for Applications for the UC President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program was established in 1984 to encourage outstanding women and minority Ph.D. recipients to pursue academic careers at the University of California. The current program offers postdoctoral research fellowships and faculty mentoring to outstanding scholars in all fields whose research, teaching, and service will contribute to the diversity and equal opportunity at the University of California.

Office of Interdisciplinary & Cross Campus Affairs (ICCA) Announces Solicitation of Applications for Interdisciplinary Events

On September 13, 2019, Vice Provost Timothy Brewer announced two funding opportunities open to all UCLA faculty members via a BruinPost. One opportunity includes bringing outstanding scholars to Campus to promote interdisciplinary and cross campus education, research, and service at UCLA. In addition to this funding, ICCA will also be accepting proposals for its Symposia, Workshop, and Planning Meeting funding opportunity. Applications for Fall awards are due Friday, November 8, 2019.

UC Irvine to Host a Workshop titled "Transdisciplinary Research on the Changing Arctic and Its Global Impacts: Enhancing Capacity for Convergence Science"

With support from the National Science Foundation, UC Irvine will host a workshop from October 31-November 1, 2019 on developing transdisciplinary, convergence research projects on the impacts of the changing Arctic on both the Arctic region and the rest of the world. Vice Chancellor for Research Roger Wakimoto was quoted in a Nature Index article, titled “These 10 institutions published the most papers in Nature and Science in 2018” published September 3, 2019. In the article, the vice chancellor for research says: “I believe the institution’s success is based on its strong commitment to teaching, recruiting and retaining some of the most talented researchers in the world, and having a close and synergistic relationship with the city of Los Angeles.”

Call for Applications: Institute of American Cultures (IAC) Social Justice Research Graduate Fellows

The UCLA Institute of American Cultures (IAC), with support from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, seeks applicants for the second cohort of the Social Justice Research Graduate Fellows program. This Graduate Fellowship is designed to: stimulate research collaboration across the College of Letters and Science and professional school students at UCLA, and bridge academic research with community engagement.

Attend a Computational Mechanics and Sciences ReACt Workshop at the University of Utah, Co-Organized with Los Alamos National Laboratory

The University of Utah and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are organizing a joint-workshop on computational mechanics and sciences. The workshop will be hosted at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City from October 10-11, 2019. A theme of the workshop will be promoting gender equity within the Computational and Science fields.

Town Hall with Dr. Chris Fall, Director of the DOE's Office of Science

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research is hosting a town hall with Dr. Chris Fall, director of the Department of Energy's Office of Science on  Friday, August 23. The Office of Science is the nation's largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences. Dr. Fall will explain its mission, research interests and how it operates with the goal of encouraging more professors to engage with the DOE’s Office of Science.

Nancy Wayne Stepping Down as Associate Vice Chancellor for Laboratory Safety

On July 17, 2019, Vice Chancellor for Research Roger Wakimoto announced via a BruinPost that Professor of Physiology Nancy Wayne has stepped down from her position as Associate Vice Chancellor for Laboratory Safety, as of July 1, 2019, and for 2019-20 will serve as Deputy to the President for University Strategic Partnerships at the University of Redlands. The campus thanks former AVC Wayne for her committed service and for her significant contributions to our campus.

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is accepting applicants for its Livermore Graduate Scholar Program. Scholarships will be awarded in the form of subcontracts to university faculty on behalf of the selected graduate students who have, or will shortly advance to, candidacy. A key feature of the program is the triad relationship between the student, the university faculty advisor, and the Laboratory technical supervisor.

Faculty Innovation Fellowship supports faculty with developing and launching startups, exemplifies UCLA's commitment to innovation

The Faculty Innovation Fellowship is a collaboration among the UCLA Technology Development Group, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Creative Activities, and Startup UCLA aiming to advance entrepreneurial excellence and startup culture among faculty across campus. The 12-week program provides 10 UCLA faculty the opportunity to develop their startup ideas under the guidance of Startup UCLA staff, venture capitalists and other experts.
