PI Responsibility for Lab Closeout

On November 7, 2023, Vice Chancellor for Research & Creative Activities (ORCA) Roger M. Wakimoto and Faculty Chair of the Safety Oversight Committee Craig A. Merlic, informed Principal Investigators (PI) their obligation to ensure they do not leave hazardous materials or abandon their animals in the vivarium following their lab shutdown. If this does occur, not only does it raise serious safety concerns, but it will incur a cost to the PI’s department. Department chairs, upon being notified of a lab shutdown, are highly encouraged to review and complete the Lab Closeout Checklist (DOC) with the PI.
