To help develop a pipeline of dedicated tobacco control researchers and advocates, the Tobacco Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP) Smoke and Vape Free Scholars Initiative (SVFSI) will support mentorship and training programs for undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and master’s students from tobacco priority populations to conduct mentored tobacco-related research, while also participating in local tobacco control projects and other educational activities.

Reported worsening of youth mental health and rising sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates highlight the need for greater research focus on the intersection of youth mental and sexual health wellness. Recent events like the COVID-19 pandemic have further increased concerns of worsening mental health among youth. LGBTQ+ youth are particularly vulnerable to poorer mental health. Specifically, LGBTQ+ youth have higher risk of substance use, depression, and suicide than their peers and may have associated higher risk for STI and HIV exposure.

The University of California Institute of Transportation Studies receives funding from the 2017 California transportation user fee revenue augmentation measure (SB1) to fund a Mobility Research Program. State law requires the UC ITS to collect and incorporate input from the Legislature and Executive branch in determining priorities for expenditure of these funds.  The RFP document will change each year in response to these priories.

The California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA (CNSI) has recently received a philanthropic commitment of $10 million over three years to establish the Noble Family Innovation Fund. The Noble Fund focuses on identifying, supporting and accelerating high-risk, high‐reward research, from basic to translational, with promise for commercialization and societal impact. Their goal is to create a model for academic research and entrepreneurship that enables strategic investment to seed discoveries that have the potential to be translated for the public good.
