Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (UCLA EDI): EDI Funding Requests

The UCLA Office of Equity, DIversity and Inclusion (EDI) is looking for partners who demonstrate innovation, leadership, and impact in advancing UCLA's fundamental commitments to equity, diversity, an inclusion. Fundable projects include ideas on how to help achieve the mission, for example, by inviting a phenomenal speaker to campus or hosting a cutting-edge symposium. The Office would like to hear your pitch and if you are match, they will partner with you by providing financial backing. You must be affiliated with UCLA to apply,

You may ask for funding for a project or event that furthers equity, diversity, and inclusion. Typical requests are for:

  • Hosting on-campus conferences, symposia, workshops, bronwnbag lunches (including catering, outreach, speakers, facilities) (includes honoraria up to $1,500) [$4,000 max];
  • Speaking honoraria (for speakers that are not part of a larger conference or event, includes travel costs) [$1,500 max];
  • Faculty or staff projects (includes research, assistance, travel [$1,000 max];
  • Attending conferences (includes registration, travel costs) [$1,000 max per participant].

Events and programming that are open to the entire UCLA community are prioritized.

Award Amount and Details

Award Details
  • The amount of available funds depends upon how the funds will be used. 
  • The total amount requested under any application should not exceed $4,000.
  • Eacy individual or entity requesting funds (e.g., an individual faculty member, an academic  unit, or a student organization) can receive a maximum of $5,000 in funding each year. This $5,000 cap can cover multiple applications and events throughout the academic year. The cap is designed to promote an equitable process in which they fund a diverse set of projects and initiatives.

UPDATE from the EDI website (2021 04 12): "In light of current circumstances, EDI funding is paused for the remainder of the 2020-2021 academic year and we will not be accepting any applications at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience. We will update this page as soon as we are able to provide any additional information."

Application cycles run during the Fall, Winter and Spring Quarters. For the 2019-2020 EDI Funding Requests cycle the due dates are as follows:

Funds needed in Fall Quarter 2019

  • Applications Due: October 21
  • Notification if funds awarded: November 12 

Funds needed in Winter Quarter 2020 

  • Applications Due: December 6 
  • Notification if funds awarded: January 6 

Funds needed in Winter Quarter 2020 

  • Applications Due: February 10
  • Notification if funds awarded: February 28

Funds needed in Spring Quarter 2020 

  • Applications Due: March 16 
  • Notification if funds awarded: April 13

  • Notification if funds awarded: May 29

Eligibility Details

Anyone afiiliated with UCLA may apply (includes staff, faculty, and registered campus organizations - including student organizations). Please note, while funds may be awarded to registered campus organizations, applications cannot be submitted by and funds cannot be awarded to individual students. Students must apply through their organizations. 

EDI will not fund items such as:

  • Normal operating funds for student organizations;
  • SWAG for speakers or attendees (e.g., plaques, trophies, mugs, pens);
  • Field trips (group travel with no folow-up programming to take place at UCLA);
  • Dissertations;
  • Paid organizers or staff to put together conferences;
  • Guest speakers/lecturers for existing courses;
  • Professional development;
  • School supplies;
  • Decorations.
