On June 6, 2022, Vice Chancellor for Research & Creative Activities Roger M. Wakimoto announced the appointment of Professor Safiya U. Noble as Acting Director of DataX, effective July 1, 2022.
As Acting Director, Professor Noble will provide strategic leadership and vision to the early growth of DataX. The Acting Director will have the opportunity to recruit outstanding faculty, create an exciting and diverse intellectual and educational community; strategically seek out new opportunities in research and education; and foster new interdisciplinary connections across campus.
Professor Noble is the Co-Founder and Faculty Director of the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry (C2i2), and Co-Director of the Minderoo Initiative on Technology and Power. In 2021, she was recognized with a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship for her ground-breaking work on algorithmic discrimination.
