On December 12, 2014, Vice Chancellor Economou and Acting Assisting Vice Chancellor – EH&S Colin W. Dimock sent out a BruinPost on December 12, 2014 providing important information to PI’s, managers and supervisors with staff and/ or students working in laboratories during the 2014-15 Winter Closure. Contacts during the closure include the following:
- Accidents, spills, fires or other incidents – dial 9-1-1 from a campus phone OR 310 825-1491 from a cell phone.
- Trouble call issues- dial 310 825-9236
- Serious injury reports – EH&S Hotline at 310 825-9797 and press option 2.
The BruinPost further reminded the campus community that under no circumstances should research staff and/or students work alone on procedures involving hazardous chemical or biological materials or other physical hazards. While it is generally preferable for research staff and/or students to always work with a partner, some exceptions may be made for low-risk research activities if the PI/ Supervisor verifies that an individual staff or student fully understands standard and emergency procedures, uses all required protective equipment, has ready access to an effective communication system that consists of a radio, telephone or cellular phone or other means that provide effective communication, such as personal alarm devices. Please refer to the BruinPost for more detail.
