Shared Resources Consortium

Former Vice Chancellor Economou created the shared resources consortium (SRC) in 2011, in partnership with the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM), the Clinical & Translational Research Institute (CTSI), the Broad Stem Cell Research Center (BSCRC) and the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (JCCC).  The mission of the SRC was to distribute funds on a competitive basis to support instrumentation for existing and proposed Shared Resources (SRs) located on the UCLA campus.

The research enterprise at UCLA is highly dependent on the services offered by SRs. At the time of the formation of the SRC, an analysis had revealed that the campus had approximately 135 shared resources at UCLA in support of research-related activities. A number of observations were made including that:

  • There was an absence of a campus wide system to track these resources
  • Several shared resources were operating with significant deficits
  • There were opportunities for standardization
  • There were limited resources or processes to evaluate requests for support or capital input for new goods, services and equipment

It was recognized that the future competitiveness of our investigators, and the international reputation enjoyed by UCLA, is enhanced by this important infrastructure.  The partners determined that the campus and faculty members would benefit from timely access, at the lowest possible cost, to the services and instrumentation provided by SRs. At the time of the formation of the SRC, SRs were being supported by recharges, grants and significant amounts of institutional funds. However, this model was increasingly under pressure because of the unreliability of the latter two revenue sources. The partners collaborated to establish a three year fund for investing in shared resources that met specific criteria and were selected through a competitive process. 

Initiation Date

The SRC was formed in FY11 with the first funding cycle occurring in FY12. 


The SRC is no longer active. The final funding cycle occurred in FY14.
