The UC Laboratory Fees Research Program enhances partnerships between UC researchers and laboratory scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Awards from this program promote the development of projects and collaborations that advance the missions of the national laboratories and UC. The UC Laboratory Fees Research Program is offering a competitive Fellowship award that provides up to three years of support for Ph.D. candidates who wish to conduct thesis research on-site at LANL or LLNL.
2023 UC-National Laboratory In-Residence Graduate Fellowships Requests for Proposals:
- UC-National Lab In-Residence Graduate Fellowships (UC-NL GF): These Fellowships support doctoral graduate students to conduct in-residence dissertation research at Los Alamos or Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in any area relevant to the labs. UC Research Initiatives (UCRI) is planning a Program Information webinar, featuring current fellows and national laboratory liaisons, in late-April to provide interested applicants with more information about the program. Award Amount and Details
The UC-National Lab Graduate Fellowship provides the following support:
- An annual award of $62,000 for two years, with the possibility of an extension for a third year.
- A $5,200 travel allowance (total for the Fellowship period) to support project-related travel.
- An indirect cost reimbursement of up to 8% (total direct cost basis) to the student’s home UC campus
Fellowship funds may be used for stipends, UC tuition and fees, and other dissertation-related expenses consistent with the proposed research. See the FAQs for general guidance on UC tuition and fees for students advanced to candidacy.

- Notification of LOI outcome decision: Monday, June 20, 2022
- Full proposals due: Thursday, September 8, 2022 at 12:00 noon Pacific Time
- Notification of review outcome: Thursday, December 15, 2022 (expected)
- Graduate Fellowship start date: April 1, 2023
