The mission of the California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP) is to prevent and eliminate breast cancer by leading innovation in research, communication, and collaboration in the California scientific and lay communities. It is administered by the Research Grants Program Office within the University of California Office of the President. Each year, CBCRP administers multiple funding opportunities. Below is a list of the annual investigator-initiated research awards that have typically been offered.
In the 2023-2024 cycle, the program is offering funding for the following award types:
- Innovative Developmental and Exploratory Award (IDEA)are for projects that challenge existing paradigms, represent a new direction for the PI, and incorporate techniques and approaches not yet well represented in mainstream breast cancer research. Researchers are encouraged to attempt breakthroughs that, if successful, could be leveraged into more substantial funding. Both established researchers and new investigators are welcome to apply. Up to $150,000 direct costs for up to 18 months.

- Full application due by March 5, 2024
- Translational Research Award applications are invited for projects that will move research into practice in the areas of prevention, detection, diagnosis or treatment of breast cancer; improved quality of life for survivors; reduction in the community and social burden caused by the disease in California; or advances in medical practices, health systems changes, health policies or environmental modifications. These projects must include human subjects. This is the final year that these awards will be offered. Up to $750,000 direct costs for up to 3 years.

Eligibility Information
- CBCRP funds research only in California.
- In accordance with University of California policy, investigators who are University employees and who receive any part of their salary through the University must submit grant proposals through their campus contracts and grants office. See program solicitation for additional information.
