California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP): Annual Investigator-Initiated Research Awards

NOTE: The California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP) offers two types of funding: annual investigator-initiated research awards and periodic opportunities for program-initiated research in targeted topics. The mission of the California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP) is to prevent and eliminate breast cancer by leading innovation in research, communication, and collaboration in the California scientific and lay communities. It is administered by the Research Grants Program Office within the University of California Office of the President.  Each year, CBCRP administers multiple funding opportunities. Below is a list of the annual investigator-initiated research awards that have typically been offered. In the 2022-2023 cycle, the program is offering funding for the following award types:

  • Innovative Developmental and Exploratory Award (IDEA) for promising high-risk/high-reward projects. Up to $150,000 direct costs for up to 18 months.
    • LOI (required) due by October 20, 2022
    • Full application due by March 2, 2023
  • Translational Research Award for projects that are on the critical path for practical application. Up to $750,000 direct costs for up to 3 years. 
    • LOI (required) due by October 20, 2022
    • Full application due by March 2, 2023
  • Community Research Collaboration (CRC) Awards (Pilot and Full Awards) for community based participatory research projects that include a collaborative partnership between a Community co-PI and an Academic co-PI in all phases of research. Up to $150,000 direct costs for 18 months (CRC Pilot), and up to $600,000 direct costs for 3 years (CRC Full).
    • Pre-application (optional) due by October 24, 2022
    • Full application due by March 2, 2023
  • Standard and Community-Led Conference Awards to support a conference, symposium, retreat, or other meeting to stimulate new ideas and collaborations. Up to $25,000. Community-Led Conference Awards have the same requirements as the standard awards, but employ a letter of intent submission process that allows conference organizers to obtain formal feedback about their event before applying.
    • Standard - Full application due by November 3, 2022
    • Community-Led LOI deadline due by November 3, 2022
    • Community-Led Full application due by February 23, 2023

  • CBCRP funds research only in California.
  • In accord with University of California policy, investigators who are University employees and who receive any part of their salary through the University must submit grant proposals through their campus contracts and grants office. See program solicitaion for additional information.
